If you’re planning your Scotland trip from the United States and including the Isle of Skye, secure your accommodation in Portree early.
Portree is the island’s main town and the ideal base for exploring Skye — especially if you’re joining my two-day Isle of Skye Tour of Dreams or three-day Edge of the World Tour, which both require overnight stays on the island.
But here’s the reality:
Accommodation in Portree sells out quickly between May and September.
Demand has increased in recent years, while new short-term let regulations have reduced availability. Fewer rooms mean higher prices and limited choice — particularly in peak season.
What Should You Expect to Pay?
• Under £100 per night: extremely rare in summer
• £180–£250: typical mid-range pricing
• £300–£400: larger hotels in peak season
If you find something well-located and reasonably priced, book it. Waiting usually costs more.

Staying Outside Portree
Broadford and Uig sometimes have availability, but they’re 30–60 minutes away. That extra drive can affect your itinerary and early starts.
For convenience, staying in Portree is always best. If the centre is full, look along Viewfield Road — it’s just a five-minute walk into town.
⸻
Dining Matters Too
Even hotel guests aren’t always guaranteed dinner reservations. Many restaurants are open to the public and fill quickly in summer.
Book your evening meal as soon as your accommodation is secured.

If You’re Touring With Luke Tours
Guests booking either my two-day Isle of Skye Tour of Dreams or three-day Edge of the World Tour. I do have access to a trusted contact in central Portree who has accommodation that includes a budget b&b, several shepherds huts and an entire house for hire on Viewfield Road. Availability is limited, so once your tour is booked, get in touch for details.
