Portree, Isle of Skye Accommodation

Jan 15, 2023 | Isle of Skye

You are booking your perfect Isle of Skye tour but you’re not sure about accommodation at Portree?

Luke Tours has a few contacts in Portree and surrounding areas as our two day Isle of Skye Tour of Dreams requires an overnight stay at the end of day one, however generally for anyone visiting the Isle of Skye you should be aware that finding affordable accommodation at the capital of the island has always been problematic during the summer months due to the volume of people visiting the area in the summer months and the shortage of accommodation.

The situation hasn’t been made any easier for 2024 and beyond due to new legislation laid down by the Scottish government which has forced some existing B&B / AirB&B owners to close their doors, this is going to have a significant impact on availability and pricing going forward. Best advice right now is that if you have found somewhere in Portree that is charging under £100 for a nights stay then I would recommend that you book it as soon as possible.

To be fair all accommodation and food in Portree is good so its unlikely you will have a bad experience wherever you book, however if you don’t nail this down at an early stage then you will be left with little option than to be forced into booking one of the bigger hotels in the town which could potentially be charging £300 to £400 for one night.

There are indeed other options such as shepherds huts and other glamping places, but prices will be high and failing that you may have to relocate to Broadford and Uig which are Skye’s second and third largest towns, however this would mean a thirty to sixty minute commute back into Portree which will impact on the start to your itinerary on the following day.

If you are booking Luke Tours Isle of Skye Tour of Dreams I have an affordable contact in the centre of Portree that we like to use, so get in touch once you have booked and we will pass on these details, however places are limited so in all scenarios booking early is of the utmost importance.

One other thing to take into account with accommodation in Portree is that many B&B / AirB&b owners don’t actually open their books until around late winter or early spring, which is the one pitfall of booking too early as you will be presented with a lot of expensive accommodation if looking too far in advance.

I will post a separate blog about places to eat and drink as this is another thing to take into consideration, even if you are booked into a local hotel some can’t guarantee an evening meal as most hotels are open to the general public, we have known guests stay at local hotels but no manage to nail down a dinner reservation so again best advice is to book your meal as soon as you have secured your accommodation.

Talking of eating, on my two day Tour of Dreams tour from Inverness I use a fantastic place at an old small viking harbour town on the island. I will be posting a separate blog about this with videos and photos, its a secluded hidden gem set in a historical area run by a good friend of mine that will that will leave you talking about the food for the rest of the day.

As far as Portree is concerned accommodation-wise there isn’t really anywhere in Portree that you would be disappointed with, its just a case of finding them. If you are struggling to find accommodation in the town centre then look to Viewfield Road which is the main road into Portree, from here you can walk into town in about five minutes for the evening.

Here are a few suggestions I can recommend based on past experience that you might like to check out first.
